Many car makers including GM started installing fly by wire electronic throttle bodies. A motor and gear reduction set inside the throttle body opens and closes the throttle plate to accomplish your request.

It will eventually learn it on its own, but it may take over a week of driving, during which time you will experience high and low idle speeds and possibly rough idle.

During that period the idle may be higher idle than normal. During these run periods you may see a check engine light.

Scan for codes and if you get throttle body related codes, clear them. Then repeat step 3 one last time. Unlike the cheaper Haynes and Chilton manuals that cover multiple year models, leaving the exact information you need to fix your car, these professional manuals cover your exact year, make, model. Plus, they contain full trouble code descriptions and troubleshooting instructions.

Or is there some other way? Is it even necessary to do it?

Reconnect then ign on for 1minnot starting it. Ign off and wait a while, can't remember how long off hand. Then start up and it will be fine. It is ign on and wait 1 minute, ign off. Job done. Don't touch the throttle pedal in that 1 minute. Sweet, should be straight forward then. First time cleaning the TB, seems like it's not too hard. Just the hose a bit tricky to reconnect those clips but I got some pliers, should do the trick.

If you perform maintenance on your Dodge vehicle, your vehicle's computer must find out what has happened. This is called the relearn procedure. Perhaps the easiest relearning procedure is automatic relearn.

This takes place when the computer has been programmed to recognize that maintenance has been done on the vehicle, such as tire rotation.

The computer then readjusts everything on its own without needing to be told what was done. This is a unique relearn procedure, only offered on Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles. You can also manually trigger a relearning procedure. If you disconnect the cables leading to your vehicle's battery, the computer's source of power, and leave them disconnected for at least half an hour, you have essentially turned off your vehicle's computer and forced it to reboot.

After the computer reboots, it will relearn your vehicle's system parameters by running a new diagnostic check as you drive. This is usually a dealer procedure, since diagnostic machines are expensive and not common among individual car owners.

Using this tool, a mechanic can run the relearn procedure that's appropriate for your Dodge. Once this is done, your car's computer will readjust to the changes and modifications made. Whenever your Dodge's computer is having difficulty relearning something, it's important that you get the computer fixed by a professional who has access to the proper diagnostic tools.

These tools can communicate with the computer. If there's a problem with your car's computer, you'll probably want to let your dealer or neighborhood mechanic find and solve the problem. Firstly, check the vehicle for any pre-existing trouble codes and make the appropriate repairs. Inspect the PCB system. Inspect the engine for any damaged hoses that could cause a vacuum leak.

Special attention should be given to the PCV system, oil dipstick, and filler cap seals for damage. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds to reset the onboard computer.

Do not perform the relearn if the service engine soon light is on and codes related to the mass airflow sensor, manifold absolute pressure, or incorrect idle speed are found. If everything is in order, we can begin. Third, turn off all accessories such as the air conditioning, rear window defogger, radio, and heater blower to prevent a load on the engine which would cause erroneous positioning of the throttle plate. Finally, make sure the front wheels of the vehicle are in the neutral position pointing straight ahead.

We are now ready to perform the required relearn procedure. Make sure the accelerator pedal is fully released. Turn the ignition switch on without starting the engine for at least 2 seconds. Turn the ignition switch off for at least 10 seconds. Again, turn the ignition on for at least 2 seconds. Turn the ignition off for at least 10 seconds. This action will inform the computer on the new release position of the accelerator pedal and the closed position.

Now that this is done, we can move on to the next step. Please make sure to follow these next instructions precisely as every action is performed within a few seconds. Turn the ignition switch on and wait 3 seconds. Immediately after the 3 seconds, the accelerator pedal must be pressed and released 5 times within 5 seconds. Wait 7 seconds and fully press the accelerator pedal and hold for approximately 20 seconds until the check engine light stops blinking and stays on. Within 3 seconds after the check engine light stays constantly on, release the accelerator pedal.

Now start the engine and let it idle. After 20 seconds, rev up the engine a couple of times to ensure idle speed is within specifications.Automotive Forums.

Ford Vehicles: Electronic Throttle Body Calibration Procedure

Under most circumstances, it will relearn after just driving the car for a while, but if your car continues to experience an abnormal idle, or you just don't want to wait for it to relearn on its own, you can try this procedure. While The negative cable is dissconnected, pump the brake pedal a few times to clear out any voltage in the system. Re-connect the negative cable after this is complete. Turn off air conditioning controls and all other accessories.

Allow engine to run for at least 5 minutes. With engine stabilized and in closed loop, the IAC motor values should be between nine to 12 counts. If not, the adjustments may be tailored by adjusting the minimum air rate screw. More throttle valve opening equals lower IAC counts. Less throttle opening equals higher IAC counts.

That's a good thing to know. Here's something I found in my Haynes to help provide some more guidance. Instead of typing a long paragraph, I'm going to put into steps.

Start the engine and run it as close to idle speed as possible until it reaches its normal operating temperature. Run it for approximately 2 minutes at RPM. Drive the vehicle as far as necessary, approximately 5 miles of varied driving conditions is usually sufficient to complete the relearning process.

Robert A. Can you please tell me how to check the counts of the IAC? Pull ECM fuse for about 30 sec. So far for the last 3 years I have never had a problem doing it this way. The problem I have, after the car warms up, you can hear, and see on the tach, it doing a periodic "bounce" down from rpm, or whatever it's supossed to be idling at all the time when warm.

The car never stalls, because it recovers very quickly, but I didn't know if this was an indication of a failing IAC motor? The car never does this when given gas I have replaced the Ignition Module a year ago, as this did go bad tach would bounce all over the place at times, and stall the engine when really warm, etc How can I Trouble shoot this, or is this a classic sign of a failing IAC motor?

It's easy enough to replace, but I don't want to do it, unless it is what is causing the problem for sure. If all else fails, go to the gm garage and have the idle reset.

The Dodge Relearn Procedures

I have learned that cleaning the throttle body before starting up after a battery disconnect helps tremendously!!! No creeping idleA motor and gear reduction set inside the throttle body opens and closes the throttle plate to accomplish your request.

It will eventually learn it on its own, but it may take over a week of driving, during which time you will experience high and low idle speeds and possibly rough idle. Leave the jumper connected for about 2-mins. Turn off all electrical accessories before proceeding. Turn off headlights, blower motor, radio, wipers, etc. During this period the idle may be higher than normal. It should slowly drop as the engine heats up. Watch the engine temp gauge and note when it reaches operating temp.

Then continue to let it idle for an additional 5 minutes. It will continue to adjust idle during this period. Reiki cleansing ritual

Hi I'm new here! I have a fiesta 1. Very randomly it has a slight stutter on acceleration or on a hill, then it went into limp mode flashing orange exclamation mark turned off the car for a min then was ok, now when I start the car in the morning it idles rough until it reaches temperature. I have changed oil, oil filter, diesel filter, MAF sensor, Intake temperature sensor, run injector cleaner in it too.

I'm going to clean the throttle body next and was wondering what the procedure is for the TB to relearn it's values, maybe this might cure cold rough idle??

Also I will clean the EGR valve.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated and if anyone knows the procedure for the TB please let me know. There would have been error codes stored if a warning light came on, for certain.

Also, if there is a Throttle body relearn procedure, then Forscan will be very likely to have it. The throttle body on a diesel does not do the same job as on a petrol engine. Most of the time it can be wide open, the engine runs lean.

Throttle body relearn procedure

Only the fuel needs to be controlled. I suspect that on the 1. I doubt if the throttle valve will be the cause of rough idle here. Faulty or sticking EGR valves can certainly cause hesitations, usually under moderate power.

Near full power the EGR is fully closed, for maximum oxygen. I have had hesitations on pull-away with my car, which was an electrical fault in the EGR. It never gave so called limp mode though. But really it needs the DTCs to be read to get anywhere without endless part swapping.

Hi Peter yes I have a obdII tool that connects to my phone it gave me MAF and IAT faults and after the incident with the yellow exclamation mark it had a misfire fault on cylinder 3 see screenshots for codes i thought the misfire could be caused by either a faulty MAF or IAT by not telling the car what air to fuel mixture is optimum but since I have changed these parts I still get rough cold idle and hesitation no misfire as of yet.

Thanks for clearing up about the TB but could it still be worth a clean and disconnect the battery for a while? I will definitely have a good look at the EGR tomorrow and try giving it a good clean. But still rough when cold and hesitation issues. There's nothing to point me in the next direction! When I read about hesitation, injector problems did cross my mind, but as you say it is the last thing to change, after all other checks.
